Press  Release

The Oldham County Police Department welcomed home one of their own on Friday, 11/19/04, as Detective Larry Congleton returned to his family and job after a two-year absence.  Congleton, an Army Reservist, was called to active duty in October of 2002, as part of the US Army Criminal Investigations Command.  His specific duties encompassed directing the protective detail for Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.  Those duties took Congleton around the world and into high-risk combat zones in Afghanistan and Iraq as Secretary Rumsfeld oversaw the missions of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In Detective Congleton’s prolonged absences from his home in Oldham County, his wife, Lisa, a school teacher at Immaculate Conception in LaGrange, provided a stable environment for the two Congleton children.  Trey, age 7 and Kayla, age 5, were both present at the reception where the OCPD recognized the entire Congleton family.  Lisa, Trey and Kayla were given gifts from the department and applauded for adapting so well in the absence of their husband and father.

Larry Congleton received The Spirit of the Duke Award from his friends and colleagues at the department that has been without his services for the past two years.  The award consisted of a John Wayne Military Commemorative .45 caliber pistol mounted on a display plaque bearing the logo pins of the five military service branches.  A large contingent of friends and associates were on hand to welcome the Congleton family as they were happily reunited at the John Black Community Center.

On May 6, 2004, Detective Larry Congleton was named the US Army Criminal Investigations Command's Special Agent of the Year.  The award is presented for outstanding performance and accomplishments over the past year.  The award distinguished Detective Congleton from among all of the US Army CID Special Agents serving throughout the world.  This was the first time in the Command's history that a reservist had won this award.

“We are extremely proud of Larry’s accomplishments while serving his country,” Oldham County Police Chief Michael Griffin stated.  “We are equally proud of Lisa, Trey and Kayla for the understanding and love they provided in order for Larry to accomplish his mission so successfully.”

Detective Congleton, who has served with the Oldham County Police Department since 1997, will resume his duties as part of the DEA Drug Task Force in the near future.
