 “IRON MIKE” STANDS WATCH

A symbolic statue of “Iron Mike,” has been placed in the lobby of the Oldham County Police Department, in silent tribute and support of the valiant men and women of the American Military as they serve the cause of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Encased in a glass display, the 13-inch high statue of hot-wax bronze, features a WW II Airborne  combat soldier intently scanning the horizon…waiting…watching…ever vigilant…for whatever comes his way.  In this case, Iron Mike will stand his watch until the last American combat soldier returns home from Iraq.

Iron Mike was originally cast in 1960, as a tribute to the heroic Airborne Troopers who served with distinction during WW II.  A 15-foot original of Iron Mike proudly stands at Ft. Bragg, N. C., atop a 12-foot pedestal.

“We felt that Iron Mike was a fitting representative of those who came from ‘the greatest generation,’” stated Oldham County Police Chief Michael Griffin, one of ten military veterans on the department.  “Iron Mike stands his silent watch in tribute to those magnificent men and women who are in harms way,’ Chief Griffin advised, “and he will remain on watch until the joyful day arrives when all our troops come home.”

The simple legend on the statue’s base reads:

“IRON MIKE” WILL STAND WATCH AT THE

OLDHAM COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

UNTIL THE RETURN OF ALL AMERICAN

MILITARY PERSONNEL FROM IRAQ

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
