BODY OF MISSING ALZHEIMER’S PATIENT FOUND Oldham County Police are investigating the death of an elderly Alzheimer’s patient who has been missing since January 17, 2005. Police initially responded on January 17, 2005, about 8:30 PM., to the 3100 block of Belknap Beach, on a missing 77 year old Alzheimer’s patient who was living with her caregiver. The caregiver stated to police that she went to use the restroom, and when she returned, Gloria Smyth was missing. An extensive search was organized, which included Oldham County Police, Oldham County Sheriff, North Oldham Fire, Oldham County EMS, Louisville Metro Air Unit, Jefferson County K-9 search and rescue association, and several residents in the area. About 12:00 PM., on January 18, 2005, a neighbor saw a green object in the water near Mrs. Smyth’s home. A boat was launched, and the body of Mrs. Smyth was recovered from the marina near her home. Police believe that Mrs. Smyth wandered from her home, and accidentally fell into the water, and was submerged until the water began to recede, revealing the location of her body. Police do not suspect foul play, and no charges are pending in this case. The Coroner will determine the cause of death. |
