LATERAL POLICE TRANSFERS

Lateral entry or transfer is similar to a qualification standard that applicants for certain police department positions must meet in order to be eligible to apply for the position. The candidates must already have a certain level of experience and be employed or have been employed by a police department within the past twelve months.  

One of the most frequently asked questions by police administrators is,   “How can we hire qualified, experienced personnel?”  The answer to this question may come in the form of lateral entry.  In fact, one of the keys to successful recruiting is the practice of a lateral entry program.

Basically, lateral entry is the ability of a police officer in one geographic location to enter employment in another area.  The officer's pay at the new department is based on experience, job knowledge, and the ability to do the job.

The recruitment of qualified personnel becomes more difficult as time passes.  In the past, all that was necessary was a pool of applicants.  Today, this is no longer the case.  In fact, in many police agencies, position vacancies outnumber the applicants.

Oldham County Police recently had fourteen applicants competing for two positions with the Agency.  Of these fourteen only four completed the physical fitness successfully.

Emmalee is currently a 15-year- old student attending Oldham County High School, in her Sophomore year, who is interested in a career in law enforcement.  She was highly competitive in all phases of testing and had she been of age she would have qualified for hiring consideration.  Emmealee is the daughter of Walt and Carole Scaff, both who were graduates of Oldham County Citizen’s Academy 7.
