Application / Applicant Information
Applications for the Oldham County Police Department are accepted year round and may be picked up at the Oldham County Police Department located at 1855 North Highway 393 in Buckner, Kentucky or obtained & submitted online here. Applicants selected shall be placed on an "Applicant Eligibility List" for consideration as openings occur. The eligibility list will be maintained for one (1) year after its certification by the Oldham County Police Merit Board. Click here for current salary information and pay rates.
Examples of Work:
Attends classes in personnel procedures, police regulations, current laws, the criminal justice system, human behavior and a variety of other topics related to police work. Works in various operational bureaus to provide additional manpower and gain familiarity with the functions of the Oldham County Police Department. Participates in practical training of firearm usage, driving, self-defense, arrest procedures, use of police equipment and a variety of other procedures and activities related to police work. Takes tests to measure knowledge gained, evaluate performance and determine progress made. Performs related work.
Working Conditions:
Lifts and/or moves heavy objects or persons in the course of rescue activities. Physically restrains persons in the course of law enforcement activities. Chases suspects on foot in the course of law enforcement/criminal apprehension activities. Works outside in all extreme weather conditions. Operates police vehicles during the day and night; observes criminal actions taking place; observes traffic violations; and reviews and prepares reports and correspondence. Communicates with other individuals in person, over a telephone, and over a radio.
Lateral Position Requirements:
As a lateral applicant, you must have been employed as a full time sworn Police Officer in the United States with a minimum of one year experience, AND must have completed the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council's (KLEC) approved required Basic Training Course or be eligible for KLEC Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS)certification.
Note: If you are an out-of-state lateral applicant, the following documentation must be submitted prior to the beginning of the hiring process. This is the responsibility of the applicant. The applicant will not begin the hiring process unless this is completed.

- Documentation that the applicant was certified as a law enforcement officer in the state where the basic training was taken. This out-of-state information must be evaluated for certification by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC) by the applicant prior to submitting the application to the OCPD.
- KLEC Out-Of-State Requirements
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Graduate from an accredited high school or G.E.D. program.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- If applicable, received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions for serving in any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
- Not have a felony conviction or any criminal action pending.
- Not have had certification as a peace officer permanently revoked in Kentucky or another state
- Not be prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm
- Recruit Applicants must pass a written general aptitude test.
- Recruit Applicants must pass a physical agility test.
- Must submit to an oral interview
- Must submit to a thorough background investigation.
- Pass a pre-employment medical examination
- Recruit Applicants must undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination
- Take a suitability evaluation
- Pass a drug screen
- Work a varied work schedule.
- Recruit Applicants must be able to successfully complete training with the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice.
